How Melo is helping to support brain injury patients

Decently support National Brain Injury Awareness month

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the challenges faced by the 1.4 million people living with acquired brain injuries (ABIs) in the United Kingdom alone. These injuries, often resulting from traumatic incidents, not only have a huge impact on patients and their families but also present complex challenges in diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation for the staff and organisations that provide care.

Among the myriad of issues faced by patients and healthcare providers, one critical area stands out: the understanding and management of challenging behaviour following brain injury. These behaviours, ranging from agitation and self-harm through to anger and physical aggression, can impede rehabilitation efforts and significantly impact patient outcomes. Yet, traditional assessment methods relying on paper-based assessments have proven inadequate in capturing the complexity of these behaviours in a timely and effective manner.

Melo in use as part of a clinical team meeting

Enter Melo – our innovative AI-driven behavioural management platform designed to revolutionise the assessment and management of challenging to manage behaviours following ABI. Developed in response to the unmet needs identified within the healthcare system, Melo represents a shift in how clinicians understand and address challenging behaviours among brain injury patients.

The idea behind Melo stemmed from over 12 months of collaborative effort between our team here at Decently and healthcare professionals from across the NHS and private healthcare space, all of whom recognised the pressing need for a more efficient and comprehensive solution. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and modern web technologies, Melo offers real-time data capture, analysis, and predictive insights to inform evidence-based decision-making and personalised patient care plans.

The benefits of Melo extend beyond its technological prowess. Through extensive collaboration with healthcare providers and patient representatives, Melo ensures that patient needs and preferences remain at the forefront of its development and implementation. This patient-centric approach not only enhances the platform's effectiveness but also fosters a sense of ownership and acceptance within the healthcare community.

In a recent evaluation conducted with the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA), Melo has demonstrated its ability to streamline data collection, improve clinical decision-making, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. By facilitating early intervention and data-driven care planning, Melo holds the potential to reduce hospital stays, minimise the use of restrictive practices, and optimise resource utilisation within the healthcare system.

Looking ahead, Melo's roadmap includes strategic initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration, ensuring data security and clinical safety, and expanding its reach across various healthcare domains. With a focus on neurorehabilitation services as a starting point, Melo envisions broader applications in stroke, dementia, mental health, and learning disability services in the future.

At its core, Melo represents more than just a technological innovation – it embodies a commitment to improving the lives of individuals living with acquired brain injuries. Through continuous research, collaboration, and innovation, Melo strives to set a new standard in brain injury care, empowering clinicians and patients alike on the journey towards recovery and rehabilitation.

As we observe and support Brain Injury Awareness Month, let us not only raise awareness of the challenges faced by brain injury patients but also celebrate and embrace new innovations that are helping to shape the future of brain injury care. So join us in championing innovation, compassion, and progress in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by acquired brain injuries, one step at a time.
